no need to fake it in interviews.

I often hear from clients that they hate feeling like they have to fake their way through interviews.

And they’re usually surprised when I tell them that I don’t think they should.

Of course, sometimes it’s helpful (or just safer) to leave something out or politely nod along.

But if you’re in the somewhat privileged position of not having to land a new role immediately, I’d always suggest showing up as genuinely as you can.

Many of my clients aren’t overly confident, some struggle to show their enthusiasm on a call, others tend to people-please, and quite a few lean into perfectionism, always over-preparing and over-delivering.

All wonderful (eeek) qualities I’ve had to work on myself, which is probably why I love working with people who recognize them too.

If any of this sounds familiar, here are a few reminders:

  • You don’t need to fake a smile or ask the “perfect” questions. Show your enthusiasm by sharing what you genuinely care about, the impact you want to have, and by asking about what matters to you in the role and company.

  • You don’t need to reassure interviewers that you’d put up with things that would eventually make you miserable. It’s perfectly fine to ask about expectations and policies, while showing excitement for growth and challenges that align with your strengths and values.

  • You don’t need to justify every gap or make up experience you don’t have. Highlight what you are great at, and show how you’re building the skills that will help you thrive in a new role.

If you get the chance, be yourself on a call. You don’t want to be hired into a role where they’re expecting someone completely different.

And yes, sometimes hearing “you’re not a match” hurts. But it also means you don’t waste months (or years) trying to be someone you’re not.
