making genuine connections that actually help.

Basically everyone I’ve ever worked with has said something like: “I’m just not good at networking.”

It doesn’t matter what industry they’re in, their job title, or how confident they seem—most people aren’t big fans of reaching out when they need support.

And it doesn’t help that most of us still think of networking as cringe-y small talk or handing out business cards—which, personally, I don’t think is all that effective anyway.

It’s really about connecting with people. Which, to be fair, still sounds pretty intimidating.

But if you’re feeling stuck, are looking for a job, or are working through a tough spot in your career, one of the best things you can do is talk to others.

Expand your bubble, get out there, and feel inspired and reassured that no one has it figured out anyway.

Being genuinely curious about someone’s life and work —that’s often where the most genuine and helpful connections begin.

People need to know what you care about to be able to support you.

And no, you don’t need to go to a dedicated networking event or fancy conference to make this happen.

The friend-of-a-friend you chatted with over cake at a birthday party, the other parents from your kid’s skateboarding competition (yes, real client example), or someone you bumped into online—they all have jobs, ideas, and connections too.

And before you expect anything back, share your own go-to resources, cheer others on, offer to support where you can.

The chances you’ll get back even more are so, so high, and you’ll end up with a network that actually feels good to be part of.
